Key and Certificate Management and Electronic Signatures
For: Systems and security administrators, managers of public key infrastructures and digitisation project managers who deploy certificates or signature solutions.
Learning outcomes
- Implement the life cycle of an organisation's keys and certificates.
- Build and verify a certificate chain of trust in a lab.
- Position an electronic signature solution within the framework of loi n°2008-08 (Electronic Transactions Act) and décret n°2008-720 (Electronic Certification Decree).
Programme over 4 weeks
| Week | Content |
|---|---|
| Week 1 | Key management: generation, storage, hardware security modules, rotation, revocation, key escrow. |
| Week 2 | Public key infrastructures: certification authorities, certificates and chains of trust; practical work in an isolated virtual lab. |
| Week 3 | Electronic signature and certification: loi n°2008-08 du 25 janvier 2008 sur les transactions électroniques and décret n°2008-720 du 30 juin 2008 relatif à la certification électronique, studied from the text itself. |
| Week 4 | Professional simulation: certificate life cycle of a fictitious organisation in a lab, from issuance to revocation, and signing a document. |
Assessment
Marked professional simulation, assessed against a rubric (70%): certificate life cycle of a fictitious organisation, in an isolated virtual lab; online knowledge-check quiz (30%). No exercises on a real system; the keys and certificates produced remain in the lab.
The certificate is awarded with a mark of at least 10 out of 20.
Optional: Cryptographic Failures and Migration
An additional 1-credit module over 2 weeks (CPP-32C), awarded as a separate certificate; together with this certificate, it makes up the full course component of the original programme.
- Failures related to key and certificate management: identification and correction in a lab system.
- Monitoring: quantum-resistant cryptography and migration planning.
