Web Hosting and Deployment

For: Developers, integrators and administrators who put web applications online and run them.

Organisation over 20 weeks

Four 5-week blocks (4 weeks of classes, 1 week of assessment). The two course units are taken unchanged from the original degree: same content, same assessments.

  • Blocks 1 and 2 (weeks 1 to 10): HEB 351 — Cloud Hosting and Deployment
  • Blocks 3 and 4 (weeks 11 to 20): DVO 352 — Continuous Integration, Continuous Deployment and Service Continuity

HEB 351 - Cloud Hosting and Deployment

To enable the learner to put an application online and keep it running there, both on a server they administer and on cloud infrastructure.

Learning outcomes

  • Configure and administer a hosting solution suited to the needs, taking its environmental impact into account.
  • Deploy applications on different architectures (cloud).
  • Containerise an application and its dependencies.
  • Compare hosting offers in terms of cost, data location and sobriety.

Content

  • Web server and application server; reverse proxy; domain names, DNS and TLS certificates.
  • Hardening a Linux server: accounts, key-based SSH access, firewall, updates.
  • Containers: images, containers, volumes, networks; multi-container application; open image format of the Open Container Initiative.
  • Cloud architectures: infrastructure, platform and functions on demand; infrastructure described as code.
  • Selection criteria: cost in FCFA (CFA francs), data hosting location and rules applicable to transfers abroad (loi n°2008-12 du 25 janvier 2008 (Personal Data Protection Act), provisions to be studied from the text), latency, energy consumption.
  • Basic monitoring: availability, resources, alerts.

Assessment: Continuous assessment (40%): marked practical work. Practical examination (60%): deployment of a containerised application over HTTPS and a note justifying the hosting choice.

DVO 352 - Continuous Integration, Continuous Deployment and Service Continuity

To automate the chain that runs from commit to production, and to ensure that an outage never results in data loss.

Learning outcomes

  • Continuously integrate and deploy applications (DevOps).
  • Ensure data security and integrity (backup, restoration, recovery after failure).
  • Regularly test restoration and verify the recovery objectives.
  • Evaluate a deployment pipeline and propose improvements.

Content

  • DevOps approach: bringing development and operations together, automation, measurement.
  • Continuous integration: build, tests, static analysis, dependency analysis, image production.
  • Continuous deployment: environments, progressive deployment, rollback.
  • Backup: 3-2-1 rule, database backup, encryption, off-site copies.
  • Recovery plan: maximum tolerable downtime, maximum tolerable data loss, procedures, restoration drills.
  • Controls in Annex A of ISO/IEC 27001:2022 relating to backup and continuity, detailed in ISO/IEC 27002:2022.

Assessment: Continuous assessment (40%): continuous integration and deployment pipeline for a project, with an evaluation note and improvement proposals. Practical examination (60%): timed restoration and recovery-after-failure exercise, with a report verifying that the recovery objectives have been met.

Career opportunities

Developer in charge of deployment, web hosting administrator, application operations technician.
