Website Performance and Digital Sobriety
For: Web integrators, webmasters, developers and digital project managers who publish services accessed over mobile networks.
Learning outcomes
- Assess the performance and weight of a web service.
- Reduce the weight of a web service through eco-design.
- Design delivery suited to mobile bandwidth constraints.
Programme over 4 weeks
| Week | Content |
|---|---|
| Week 1 | Performance and weight of a web service for users who pay for their mobile data; weight budget. |
| Week 2 | Eco-design: optimised images and fonts, lazy loading, caching, offline operation. |
| Week 3 | Media delivery: content delivery networks, adaptive video; codecs chosen according to the actual device base, H.264 as the baseline, VP9 and AV1 if hardware decoding is available, Opus or AAC audio. |
| Week 4 | Professional simulation: performance audit of a provided service and measured reductions in its weight, in a virtual lab. |
Assessment
Marked professional simulation in a virtual lab, assessed against a rubric (70%): performance audit and measured reductions in the weight of a service; online knowledge-check quiz (30%).
The certificate is awarded with a mark of at least 10 out of 20.
Optional: Sobriety Plan for a Web Service
An additional 1-credit module over 2 weeks (CPP-12C), awarded as a separate certificate; together with this certificate, it makes up the full course component of the original programme.
- Sobriety plan: measures adopted and weight budget.
- New performance measurement to check the effect of the measures.
