Scoping and Designing Digital Services

For: Digital project managers and officers, website and application managers, and interface designers in government bodies, companies and agencies who commission or design digital services.

Organisation over 20 weeks

Four 5-week blocks (4 weeks of classes, 1 week of assessment). The two course units are taken unchanged from the original degree: same content, same assessments.

  • Blocks 1 and 2 (weeks 1 to 10): PJN 231 — Digital Project Management I — Scoping and Specifications
  • Blocks 3 and 4 (weeks 11 to 20): UXD 232 — Prototyping and User Testing

PJN 231 - Digital Project Management I — Scoping and Specifications

The first stage of project management: turning an often vague request into a properly scoped project and a requirements specification that can be committed to.

Learning outcomes

  • Analyse a request and identify the needs, scope and constraints.
  • Analyse the stakeholders and risks of a digital project.
  • Write a verifiable functional and technical requirements specification.
  • Estimate the workload, schedule and budget of a project in FCFA (CFA francs).

Content

  • Life cycle of a digital project and roles: client, project manager, team, service providers; reference points from ISO 21502:2020.
  • Scoping note: objectives, scope, deliverables, milestones, stakeholders, risks.
  • Requirements specification: context, functional requirements, technical constraints, accessibility, sobriety, acceptance criteria.
  • Site structure, page zoning and illustrated specifications.
  • Workload estimation, schedule, budget and consultation of service providers.

Assessment: Continuous assessment (30%): scoping note with stakeholder and risk analysis. Group project (70%): complete, costed requirements specification, defended on campus or by videoconference before the client or a panel playing that role.

UXD 232 - Prototyping and User Testing

To move from the need to the interface, then check with real users that the interface meets the need.

Learning outcomes

  • Organise the information architecture and user journeys of a service.
  • Produce a low-fidelity then high-fidelity interactive prototype.
  • Validate product and service prototypes through user testing.
  • Analyse the results of a test and turn them into prioritised fixes.

Content

  • Information architecture: content inventory, site structure, navigation, labelling.
  • From sketch to prototype: zoning, wireframe, visual mock-up, clickable prototype using an open-source tool such as Penpot.
  • Design system: components, states, grid, shared library.
  • User testing: protocol, scenarios, recruitment, facilitation, observation.
  • Analysis: task success rate, errors, verbatim comments, prioritisation grid.

Assessment: Project (60%): prototype and design file. Continuous assessment (40%): user test report with prioritised fixes.

Career opportunities
